We all feel sad from time to time, but intense sadness that lasts for days to we could be something more. Depression is the most common mood disorder characterized by feelings of sorrow,  helplessness, and hopelessness.

People experience depression in different ways. It may interfere with your relationships, your job, your physical health and every aspect of life.  Medications for depression may lose effectiveness over time and can have unpleasant side effects.

Now a non-invasive, painless treatment is helping people take back their life from depression. It is called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS. It is FDA approved as a treatment for major depression and a medically cleared as a proven effective solution for other mental disorders.

This procedure is now available locally at Shore Clinical TMS in Somer Point. According to their site, "TMS is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. TMS therapy provides local electromagnetic stimulation to specific brain regions known to be directly associated with mood regulation. These areas are known to be underactive in those diagnosed with depression.  Stimulating these areas can improve the brain’s ability to regulate mood."

The typical program consists of daily 20-minute treatments for about six weeks.  There are no side effects and treatments are covered by insurance.
