Let’s face it, no one enjoys getting sick. On the plus side, we can take some very  simple steps to reduce contact with germs and lower our risk of getting ill.

Here are six things we can do right now to stay healthy, especially over cold and flu season.

    Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue on hand make sure to aim your cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow and not your hands.

    Keep Hands Away From Your Face

    Germs can enter our body easily, and we usually we don't even know it. We pick up germs simply by shaking someone's hand or touching a germy surface. That is why we need to avoid touching our face, eye area, nose, mouth and biting our nails. This makes it much easier for germs to get into our system.

    Carry a Travel Size Sanitizer

    Keeping a travel size alcohol based hand sanitizer or even antibacterial wipes can help prevent spread illness when on the go. It's a convenient way to keep your hands clean. You never know what kind of sticky situation you may encounter during the day.

    Keep Your Surroundings Clean

    In the event you came in contact with someone who is sick, you can always disinfect your surroundings. Wipe down surfaces that could possibly be contaminated such as door knobs, your desk, light switches,

    Boost Immune System

    Our bodies do a remarkable job protecting us from illnesses most of the time. Depending on how strong our immune systems are, our bodies can recover more easily. Keep eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and make sure you get lots of sleep so your body can heal itself. Daily exercise and keeping stress at bay can help too.

    Sing ABCs While Washing Your Hands

    Now some may find this comical but it really works… singing the alphabet song is a great guide for knowing when you’ve washed your hands sufficiently. The proper amount of time to wash one’s hands is about 20 seconds long with soap and warm water. Since our hands touch just about everything throughout the day, it is imperative that we practice washing our hands to prevent spreading illnesses, infections, and germs in general.
