If you like to walk, you know it is a great form of exercise that burns calories, costs nothing and only requires a good pair of sneakers. But if you experience problems with your knee,  pain could keep you from walking. I had surgery on one of my knees and from years of tennis, I have some arthritis and tendonitis in my knees.

I recently took a three-mile walk on the beach and toward the end the felt it, especially because walking on sand in bare feet changes the muscles we normally use.  However, I stretched after my walk and it made a difference. There is a lot we can do to prevent knee or treat knee pain.  Here are several tips for what you can do if knee pain has stopped you from going on your walk.

  • 1

    DON'T SIT FOR LONG PERIODS

There are many negatives to sitting down for a long time, but walking every day can change all of those negatives into positives. We are meant to move and by sitting too long, your muscles and joints will only get tighter.

    STAY AT A HEALTHY WEIGHT

Walking on concrete might be bad for your knees, but nothing is worse for your knees than being overweight. If you are overweight, shed some pounds by exercising regularly. This will make walking more relaxing and less painful.

  • 3

    WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES

Comfort matters a lot when it comes to the shoes we wear. If the sole of your shoe has broken down, buy a new pair that’s more comfortable. The more comfortable your feet are, the less pain you’ll feel in your knees, and the more likely you will be able to complet your walk.

    AVOID UNFORGIVING TERRAIN

Asphalt and concrete can be tough on our knees. When going on a long walk, think about walking on grass, sand or dirt instead. These surfaces can be a little easier on your knees. Don't forget to stretch when you finish your walk.
