I’m a failure” or “I always mess things up” are phrases you may say to yourself when things don't go as planned. How we talk to ourselves, especially if it's negative, can significantly impact our attitude, self-confidence, and how we show up for ourselves and others. Negative self-talk and constantly ruminating on our flaws and mistakes often create anxiety, disappointment, and sadness. Let's put it this way: if we talked to our friends the way we talk to ourselves, we wouldn't have any friends.
Although we can’t necessarily control a situation, we can control how we respond to it! Instead of beating yourself up, consider speaking to yourself in a way that is supportive and reassuring. Here are three examples of negative phrases you may be saying to yourself and how you can transform them into more positive and encouraging statements.

“I messed that up big time, they’re going to fire me”

Instead of focusing on the mistake you made, try saying to yourself: "I make mistakes and that’s okay. I am continuing to learn from the mistakes I make”

    “I can’t do this because it’s too hard. I shouldn’t even try.”

Confidence is key. Next time you find yourself doubting your abilities, tell yourself: “This is a challenge but I am capable. I will take it one step at a time. I believe in myself.”

“They picked me apart in that meeting; they must think I’m stupid”

Felt like you didn't do your best in that important meeting? That's okay! Say to yourself: “Their feedback is a learning experience. I will use their criticism to become even better and ask for help if needed”.
