You Never Know When the Urge to Merge will Take Over

Ah, the "urge to merge." It doesn’t check the time, place—or sometimes, the practicality of the location.

Over the years, people have gotten creative with where they let passion take the wheel. And one of the most legendary spots?

The trusty car.

Back in the day, those spacious sedans with cushy bench seats made it a lot easier to get cozy.

Nowadays, squeezing into compact cars and SUVs takes the flexibility of a yoga instructor.

Still, when there’s a will, there’s usually a fogged-up window—or so I’m told.

But here’s the kicker: is getting frisky in your four-wheeled chariot legal in New Jersey?

Spoiler alert: Not exactly.

According to New Jersey’s Section 2C:14-4: Lewdness, it’s illegal to engage in any “flagrantly lewd and offensive act” that could be seen by someone who didn’t sign up for the show.

Translation?

If someone stumbles upon your backseat adventures and feels alarmed or offended, you’re looking at a disorderly person's offense.

Serious Trouble?

And here’s where it gets serious: if there’s even a chance a child could witness your "midnight drive-in special," things shift from embarrassing to life-altering.

Penalties include up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, and a two-year suspension of a driver’s license.

So, while those wild nights might feel nostalgic, the potential fallout could leave you wishing you’d opted for, well, a more private venue.

After all, fond memories of the backseat shouldn’t include court dates and fines, right
