Juvenile Injured in Electric Bicycle Crash
Stafford Township Police were called to the scene of the e-bike crash with a vehicle at the intersection of Parker Street and Hillard Boulevard on Wednesday at about 6 pm.
The investigation found that the juvenile was traveling against the flow of traffic while operating the e-bike on the shoulder of Hillard Boulevard.
A vehicle at the stop sign on Parker Street was making a right turn onto Hillard Boulevard, according to police. As the vehicle began to turn, the kid's e-bike collided with the vehicle's passenger side.
The kid injured in the crash was transported by medical helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for evaluation and treatment.
Police say no charges have been filed, and the crash remains under investigation.
Police don't say how old the child riding the bike was or if he or she was wearing a helmet.
NJ's New e-Bike Law
New Jersey's pending new tough legislation on e-bikes is scheduled to go into effect on July 19. The law was signed in January, but riders were given a 180-day grace period to get their bikes and paperwork in order.
According to the new law, e-bike riders must be 15 or older and pass a knowledge, vision, and road test before obtaining an e-bike license.
Then the new e-bike riders will obtain a permit and practice riding the e-bike and following the rules for 45 days before obtaining a license.
