Community Rallies Around Family After Death of Margate Mom
Isn't it amazing how people can respond and help a family in their time of need after a tragedy?
After the unexpected death of Alanna Smallwood in December, people around South Jersey have stepped up to help the family of the Margate mother of three.
Alanna Smallwood Had a Bright Spirit and a Beautiful Smile
Alanna Smallwood died on December 12th after being diagnosed in October with ALS Leukemia. She was a devoted wife, loving mother to Gianna, 13, Aspen,12, and Eva, 7, a caring daughter and sister, and a dear friend to many.
Alanna lived in Margate, where her husband Greg is the chief of the Margate Beach Patrol. Their three kids are students in Margate schools and the family is very well-known around town.
Alanna also left a lasting impression on people in and around Avalon and Stone Harbor, where she was a school counselor and a math teacher for 23 years.
South Jersey Comes to the Aid of the Smallwood Family
Shortly after Alanna died, a GoFundMe was started to help Greg with general expenses and to establish a college tuition fund for Gianna, Aspen, and Eva. So far, 435 people have donated over $59,000. You can see a link to the GoFundMe below.
Another Way to Help the Smallwoods
Teachers and families who knew Alanna from her career as an educator are holding "Supper for the Smallwoods" on Thursday, Jan 25th at the Princeton Bar & Grill, 2008 Dune Dr. Avalon. The Princeton will contribute 20% of its dinner sales that night to support the Smallwood family.
