5 Tricks For Healthier Food Shopping
If you are trying to eat better, a good place to start is in the supermarket. It is not always easy to make smart choices, but with a little planning and strategic shopping cart maneuvering, you can leave the grocery store with bags full of food that is as nutritious as it is delicious. Here are five easy tricks to get you on the right path (or aisle) to healthier food shopping.
- 1
Plan Ahead
The start of a successful trip to the store is planning what meals you want to eat for the week before you go. Be sure to include major food groups your body needs, like protein, fruit, vegetables, and dairy and skip the processed foods. Make a list and stick to it.
- 2
Keep to the Outer Edge
When shopping in the store stay to the edge, that is where your healthiest items are. The meat, fish, poultry, produce, and dairy is usually on the outer edge of the supermarket, and the junk food is in the aisles in the center of the store.
- 3
Buy Real Food
Try and select foods that don’t have more than five ingredients in them. When choosing juice or products like them make sure they say “100%” on them.
- 4
Don't Go Hungry
Never shop while hungry, it will make it more difficult to resist processed or junk food. Have a good meal before you go to the supermarket, so you are not tempted to just grab anything.
- 5
Get Kids Involved
You can teach kids or grandkids about healthy eating and let them select foods from healthier sections of the store, such as the fruit aisles. Don't let them drag you to the candy or chips section. It could be too tempting for both of you!
