Who knew that after only 3 years your pillow could contain bacteria, pollen, mold, and dust mites? GrossDust mites, which belong to the spider family, like to hang out in the crevices of your pillow.

You can't see them, but they can lurk in your pillow or carpet. Plus  dirt, oil and dead skin cells get trapped there, which may lead to acne...and to think we lay your head down on that every night.

Experts say we should replace our pillows every three years. If you're not sure if your pillow is still doing its job, ask yourself:

  • Is the foam or batting inside the form lumpy or bumpy?
  • Does your feather pillow have to be punched or fluffed up for support?
  • If you fold the pillow in half, does it stay folded?

If you answered yes to any of these, it's time for a nice, new pillow. Zippered pillow protectors may help but they should be washed every three weeks.  Down alternative pillows can be washed while down feather pillows should be dry cleaned.  Between cleanings, you can put your pillow in the dryer for about 30 minutes on low.
