Upcoming Events In AC In Honor Of Martin Luther King Day 2020
This upcoming Monday is Martin Luther King Day and there are various events happening in South Jersey to honor this great man's work.
Take a look at some of these events that are open to the public because you may find something that will teach you new fun facts or inspire you to get involved and give back.
7th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Read-In
Saturday, January 18th @ 1:00 PM
Atlantic County Atrium, 1 North Avenue, Atlantic City (Next to main library)
Guests and library staff will read some of Martin Luther King Jr.'s best work including the "I Have A Dream," "Letter From A Birmingham Jail" and "I've Been to the Mountaintop."
The Atlantic City High School Choir will also be performing at this free, public event.
Also happening in honor of the holiday: a "Food for Fines" drive is happening Jan. 21st to 25th. Anyone with overdue library materials can make a food donation instead of paying a late fee.
For info, call (609) 345-2269 ext. 3075.
15th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Monday, January 20th @ 9:00 AM
Stockton University - Atlantic City & Galloway Campuses
Registration starts at 8:30 AM and the program begins at 9:00 AM. Projects are available on a first come, first serve basis.
Call (609) 652-4256 with any questions or concerns.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Ceremony
Monday, January 20th @10:30 AM
The Civil Rights Garden & St. James A.M.E. Church
This event is sponsored by the NAACP Atlantic City Branch and the City of Atlantic City. There will be a ceremony and program to honor MLK's work and Rev. Latasha Milton is going to be a guest speaker.
Here is the run down:
10:30 AM - Meet at MLK School Complex, 1700 Marmora Ave.
11:00 AM - March to the city's Civil Rights Garden
11:30 AM - Bell Ringing & Ceremony
12:00 PM - Program at St. James A.M.E. Church
Community Conversation & Lunch
Monday, January 20th - 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Worthington Campus Cafeteria inside Atlantic Cape Community College. (1535 Bacharach Blvd)
This event is sponsored by the Atlantic City Arts Foundation and will include a free lunch. Members of the community will engage in conversation about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he has inspired Atlantic Cape Community College faculty members to do better and give back.
"The Mountaintop"
Friday, January 24th @ 8:00 PM
Claridge Hotel's Celebrity Theater - 123 South Indiana Ave, Atlantic City
This event, by far, is my favorite on the list. "The Mountaintop" is a play written by Katori Hall which shows Martin Luther King Jr.'s last hours before his assassination which occurred on April 4th, 1968 in Memphis. There is no greater power than the power of art and theater.
