Spider veins are usually just underneath the skin and they have the appearance of a web, hence the name spider vein. They are usually a result of genetics, gender, and lifestyle, and none of us like the way they look.

Unlike varicose veins, are usually painless and rarely cause discomfort. Both spider veins and varicose veins are most often found on the legs and can be red, purple, or blue in color. Generally,  spider veins are more of a cosmetic issue than a medical concern, as opposed to varicose veins.  Varicose veins usually have underlying conditions that cause them to swell.  In rare cases, however,  spider veins can be caused by other factors, so if they cause any pain, it is important to see your physician.

If you have spider veins, you are not alone. Studies show 60% of people have spider veins and age can increase the likelihood and number of spider veins you have. By the age of 80, up to 80% of women have spider veins.

Fortunately, there are easy treatments to remove spider veins. Dr. Jeffrey Gosin, Medical Director of  Shore Vascular and Vein Center in Somer Point, discusses the different options. After meeting with a patient, he recommends  a treatment plan that will get the best results.
