The horses responsible for my favorite beer commercials are coming to Margate this summer.

The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol of quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933 will be in Margate on Thursday, Aug 15.

The Budweiser Clydesdales to Make a Stop in Margate

You are invited to see the Budweiser Clydesdales from 2 to 4 pm, the Margate Business Association said.

The eight-horse hitch will be harnessed to a red Budweiser beer wagon from 2 to 3 p.m. in front of the Island House condominium building in the beach block of Cedar Grove Avenue.

Around 3 pm, once the horse team is ready to go, they will head down Atlantic Avenue and stop for a photo opportunity and presentation by our well-known icon, Lucy the Elephant. (1)
The team will then head up Washington Ave for a stop in front of Historic City Hall for another photo opportunity. (2)
After that, the Clydesdales will move to Ventnor Ave and stop in front of the Margate City Fire Department for photos. (3)
They will continue down Ventnor Avenue with a brief pause at Benson Avenue for a photo with our Lucy the Elephant water tower in the background. (4)
At that point, the Clydesdales will return to Cedar Grove Avenue, where they will be unharnessed.

There will be barricades in place that will allow everybody to get a great look, but there will be no opportunity to pet or touch the horses during the event, which will not be allowed

More About the Clydesdales

There are lots of interesting tidbits about the Budweiser Clydesdales.

Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, and weigh an average of 2,000 pounds.

The horses must be bay in color, have four white legs, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail.

A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.

A single Clydesdale hitch horse will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay, and 30 gallons of water per day.

Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian. In the early days of brewing, Dalmatians were bred and trained to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries.

Budweiser Clydesdales’ horseshoes measure more than 20 inches from end to end and weigh about 5 pounds.
