Forums to Discuss Future of Dilapidated Ocean Drive Bridge

Lower Township’s Middle Thorofare Bridge is so old it is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, which is a problem for a bridge. The toll drawbridge, connecting Wildwood Crest and Cape May along Ocean Drive, was built in 1939 and is now in seriously bad shape.

Cape May County plans to host two public forums May 3 to discuss the future of Lower Township’s Middle Thorofare Bridge, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

Bridgehunter.com says the latest inspection of the bridge found it to be in poor condition for super structure, sub-structure and overall condition. That doesn't give you a very secure feeling, does it?

In a statement about the forum discussions concerning the bridge, Lower Township points out that corrosion has necessitated lowering the weight limit to 15 tons and forced fire trucks from the Erma fire station responding to an emergency in Diamond Beach to travel over the George Redding Bridge into Wildwood, rather than cross the Thorofare Bridge.

Times for the May 3 public forums have not yet been determined.
