Crews Battling 300-Acre Wildfire in Wharton State Forest

Firefighters are working to contain a wildfire that has spread to 300 acres in Wharton State Forest.  A large plume of smoke can be seen in the sky above Wharton State Forest in helicopter footage by 6ABC.

A wildfire that started Wednesday morning in Wharton State Forest has spread to 300 acres by this afternoon, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

The fire covers parts of Waterford Township, Camden County, and Shamong Twp., Burlington County, and was estimated to be about 300 acres in size during the 3 pm update from fire crews.

The fire is an estimated 40% contained. No structures have been impacted.

How Firefighters Are Battling the Blaze

Crews are utilizing a backfire operation to burn fuel ahead of the main body of fire which will aid containment efforts.

The Forest Fire Service has responded to the wildfire with ground crews and an observation helicopter.

The next update is due at about 8 pm on Wednesday.
