Per NJ Advance Media, Melton, a redshirt freshman, was taken into police custody and suspended from the team indefinitely following a paintball gun incident. Melton along with freshman Chris Long have each has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.

“I was informed that Chris Long and Malachi Melton were taken into police custody early this morning as a result of an incident involving a paintball gun. Both players have been suspended immediately,” Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said in a statement Tuesday morning.

The former Cedar Creek star is the younger brother of Rutgers wide receiver Bo Melton and has had a solid start to the season for the Scarlet Knight defense. The younger Melton has a blocked punt, a fumble recovery, and two interceptions this season, including an interception return for a touchdown in the opening week win against Temple.
