Police Warn of New Scam Targeting NJ Drivers
Most of the scams we have seen recently, involve the internet.
However, there's a new scam that has come to the attention of authorities, and this one doesn't involve the internet.
Enough people have brought this scam to the attention of authorities, and police want to spread the word.
Police in NJ Uncover New Scam
Police in Manchester Township have discovered a letter that is being left on the windshield of cars in area shopping centers.
The letter, printed on official-looking letterhead, advises people that they are being summoned to appear in court before the Honorable Daniel F. Sahin.
The letter claims that the vehicle's license plate was "recorded in violation of New Jersey Statutes 39:4-138z- parking in a fire zone."
Drivers are advised that they can view a video of the alleged violation at the Prosecutor's office.
Real Judge, Fake Letter
The Honorable Daniel F. Sahin is a real judge. He is a municipal judge who hears cases in Manchester-Lakehurst-Plumsted Municipal Court.
The letter in question, however, is a complete fake.
Police remind the public that they would never leave a letter on someone's car if they were due in court.
They advise drivers not to follow the directions in the letters, and report the letter to local authorities.

This scam is similar to another popular scam that involves scammers calling unsuspecting people and advising them there is a warrant for their arrest.
Police have similarly warned that they do not call people who have active warrants. If they want you, they will find you in person.
Sharing Personal Information Can be Dangerous
Never give any personal information such as driver's license, social security birthday or anything else to people you don't know.
These scams are particularly worrisome for elderly people. Scammers can sound very convincing and are known to be aggressive.
Additionally, the advent of AI technology has made some of the calls very confusing.
