Longport Police are looking for two burglars who were looking for open car doors and stole a bicycle from an open garage early Saturday morning, May 30th.

The two would-be crooks were casing properties, looking for something to steal in the area of North Evergreen Avenue and Winchester Avenue, police say.

Thieves Caught on Surveillance Video

Two people wearing dark clothing and face coverings can be seen on video moving through the neighborhood and attempting to access property.

During the incident, a bicycle was stolen from a residential garage. The suspects were last seen traveling northbound on Evergreen Avenue toward Sunset Avenue.

People from the neighborhood are being asked to review the home video from about 2:30 am to 4 am on Saturday.

A Lesson Learned

Even though the only thing stolen in this incident was a bicycle, the Longport Police point out how using precautions like making sure car doors were locked helped one homeowner avoid being ripped off.

This incident also serves as a reminder that simple preventative measures can significantly reduce opportunities for crime. In this case, a locked vehicle was targeted but remained secure, while an unsecured garage provided an opportunity for property to be taken.

Something similar happened in my Margate neighborhood recently, when a neighbor forgot to lock the vehicle doors one night and found out the next morning that the vehicle had been rifled through.

Undoubtedly, the thieves went to other vehicles on my block, but everyone else had the doors locked.

These thieves are looking for an easy score, a door unlocked, or something left outside to steal. You can protect yourself by not leaving any easy pickings.

If you saw anything suspicious in Longport early Saturday morning or have surveillance footage that could assist police, contact the Longport Police Department at 609-822-2141 and ask for Sgt. Slattery #334 or Officer Liam Nolan #339.
