Joe Mack, Owner of Wildwood Boardwalk’s Mack’s Pizza Dies
South Jersey lost one of our truly great pizza makers today. Joe Mack, founder and owner of Mack's Pizza on the Wildwood Boardwalk, died at 91.
Joe was one of the sons' of Anthony Mackrone, “Tony Mack”, who moved from Trenton, where he had made tomato pies, to the Wildwood boardwalk in 1953, according to Mackspizzaofstoneharbor.com.
According to the family history, Tony Mack brought his wife Lena and four children, Duke, Joe, Kitty and Vincent to Wildwood Avenue and became an overnight sensation on the Wildwood Boardwalk.
In 1956, he provided an opportunity to his cousin, Frank Manco to join him in Ocean City and Mack-Manco Pizza was born.
Joe Mack, of Middle Township, opened Mack's Pizza on the Wildwood Boardwalk in 1953 with the help of his parents and two brothers and sister. Sixty-six years later locals and tourists alike still love Mack's delicious thin crust pizza with the wonderful sauce!
Our thanks to Pass the Tramcar Please for letting us know about Joe's passing.
Here is an interesting retrospective of the Mack family history
