We might strive to eat together as a family but , but with today’s hectic schedules, it doesn't always happen. Yet regular family meals are linked to higher grades and self-esteem, healthier eating habits and weight, improved social skills and more responsible behavior.

During this Eat Better, Eat Together Month, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, encourages us to come back to the dinner table and eat more meals together as a family.

Making and eating dinner at home is one way families can stay connected and share their daily experiences together as a family while enjoying a nutritious meal. When you cook your own meals, you know what you’re putting into your food, which is often healthier — and if you get your kids involved in cooking, they feel proud of helping and are more likely to eat wholesome foods.

    Schedule Meals

    Look at everyone's schedule and pick a mealtime that works for the entire family.

    Prepare In Advance

    On busy days, serve something quick and easy so there is more time to talk. Prepare food in advance so you can heat it up for a quick dinner.

    No-Screen Zone

    Turn off all screens, including TVs,  laptops and tablets. Leave cell phones in a different room.  Make the dinner table a No-Screen Zone.

    Let's Talk

    Get the conversation going and include everyone.  Make family meals a time for everyone to feel open to talk and share their thoughts. Think of a question everyone can go around the table and answer such as, "What was your favorite part of the day?" .
