Broadway Delays Reopening Date (Yes, Again) To 2021

We tried to reopen step by step, but the process has been put to a halt as coronavirus cases have started to spike around the country.

Plus, being that Governor Phil Murphy just announced that indoor dining has been postponed indefinitely, it is not too surprising that other crowd-gathering activities have also delayed their reopening as well.

Broadway -- which closed on March 12th and was supposed to originally reopen on June 7th, and then on September 6th -- has now delayed their reopening date once again.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to enjoy the music performances on Broadway until at least January 3rd, 2021.

“The Broadway experience can be deeply personal but it is also, crucially, communal,” said Thomas Schumacher, chairman of the board of The Broadway League, which represents producers.

“The alchemy of 1,000 strangers bonding into a single audience fueling each performer on stage and behind the scenes will be possible again when Broadway theatres can safely host full houses," he added. “The safety of our cast, crew, orchestra and audience is our highest priority and we look forward to returning to our stages only when it’s safe to do so.”

This will also postpone shows that were slated to hit the stage this fall including "The Music Man" starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster which will now open May 2021.

Other shows including "Hangmen" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?" have abandoned their plans after the announcement of Broadway's opening being delayed.

Fingers crossed this is the last delay for Broadway....because eventually, the show must go on.
