The hugs, kisses, and handshakes we share over the holidays could be spreading more than just good cheer. Germs can spread quickly during this festive season, increasing the risk of illness. Thankfully, there's a simple step we can all take to reduce this risk: handwashing.

Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs and keep ourselves healthy. Many of the infectious diseases we encounter, like colds, flu, and even COVID-19, can be spread by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching our faces. Washing our hands removes these germs before they can make us sick.

To ensure we're effectively removing germs, we need to wash our hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This is roughly the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice. Start by wetting your hands with clean, running water. Apply enough soap to cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together to create a lather. Make sure to cover the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds before rinsing them well under clean, running water. Finally, dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

It's essential to wash your hands at key times to prevent the spread of germs. Before and after preparing or eating food, after using the restroom, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, after touching garbage, before and after caring for someone who is sick, and after touching pets or handling pet food are all crucial moments to practice proper hand hygiene.

While handwashing is crucial, there are other steps you can take to stay healthy during the holiday season. When soap and water aren't available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Protect others by staying home when you're feeling unwell. Practice good hygiene by covering your mouth and nose with tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues immediately and wash your hands.

By practicing proper handwashing and following these additional tips, we can help prevent the spread of germs and ensure a healthier, happier holiday season for everyone.
