Monopoly:The Musical , set right here in Atlantic Cityis one step closer to taking the Broadway stage with the signing of a well-known group of writers create the project.

Plans for a Broadway adaptation of the game were first announced in 2016, with word that toymaker Hasbro Inc.was partnering with Broadway producers to create a Broadway musical, which like the game itself, will take place in Depression-era Atlantic City.

This week, the New York Post broke the news that Rick Elice—a Tony nominee for Jersey Boys and Peter and the Starcatcher will pen the book, while Dan Lipton and David Rossmer will work on the score.

The game Monopoly was developed in 1903 and marketed by Parker Brothers during the the Great Depression, teaching the elements of business. As players move around the board, they are allowed to buy real estate based, of course, on the names of streets in Atlantic City.

The Post report says the musical is a screwball comedy set in Atlantic City during the Depression. One of the main characters is Charles Darrow, who’s credited with inventing the game.

The possibilities of a hit musical based on and in Atlantic City could potentially be a big shot in the arm for the local economy, so we'll keep a close eye on the artistic progress of Monopoly: The Musical.
