Egg Harbor Township is getting a new Chief of Police. Captain Frederick Spano will be taking over as chief after being sworn in on Thursday afternoon. Spano is succeeding EHT Police Chief Michael Hughes.

Here Are Four Things to Know About the New Egg Harbor Twp Police Chief

1- Rising Through the Ranks

Chief Spano joined the Egg Harbor Township Police Department in 1998 and worked as a patrol officer. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2016 and graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2018. Spano made captain in 2019.

2- Police Experience

Chief Spano has had a wide range of responsibilities in his 28 years with the Egg Harbor Township Police, including being the commander of the Operations Bureau which oversees patrol, the K-9 unit, the traffic safety unit, and SWAT.

Over the years, Fred Spano has been assigned to the field training unit and criminal investigations, which incorporates homicide, theft, burglary & robbery.

3- Education

EHT Chief of Police Spano has a master's degree in administrative science from  Fairleigh Dickinson University and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Delaware.

4- Volunteer Work

Spano volunteers with the Margate Terrapin Rescue, working to protect the Diamondback Terrapins by limiting their ability to cross the causeway. He also helps with the annual flag placement ceremony at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetary.
