It’s springtime and flowers are blooming everywhere, including my yard.  And every year this amazes me.  Why so?  I guess because I don’t have much of a green thumb.  I buy wild flowers, plant them, and see what survives.  Actually, for someone who used to simply buy mums and stick them on the porch (still in pots), I guess I’ve come a long way.

Luckily for me, the people who lived here before me were pretty decent gardeners.  They planted perennials and much to my surprise I haven’t managed to kill them off…yet anyway.  And every year my favorite flowers are the lilacs.  And I know exactly why they’re my fave.  It’s all about childhood memories.  To this day I have fond memories of bringing my Mom lilacs.  I would take a walk through the alley near our house and pick lilacs for her.  It wasn’t until years later (as an adult) that I realized those lilacs weren’t just growing wild in the alley.  They were planted in neighbors’ back yards.  So, basically I was trespassing in their yards and stealing their flowers.  Yikes!!  I had no idea!!  All I knew was that I loved to see the smile on my Mom’s face when I brought her lilacs.  And to this day whenever lilacs bloom in my yard, I think of my Mom and smile.  I hope the next time she visits me they’ll still be in bloom, so I can pick some for her.  Just don’t let me catch any kids in my yard stealing my lilacs…  unless they’re picking them to take home to their moms.  Then maybe I’ll let it slide.  :)
