Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Wildwood Police Chief Joseph Murphy issued a joint release today announcing the capture of 40-year-old shooting suspect William Hoyle.

Hoyle, a resident of Wildwood, is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, as well as weapons-related charges.

The charges result from an incident that occurred on July 9th in Wildwood.

Police say they responded to a call of shots fired at 3817 Pacific Avenue and found 20-year-old Vilte Gruzdyte had sustained injuries from a gunshot wound to the head.

The victim was transported to the Atlantic City Medical Center, where she was treated for her injuries.

According to police,

"On the morning of July 10, 2024, the Cape May County Regional SWAT Team executed a Court Authorized search warrant at a residence in the 4700 block of Pacific Avenue. As a result of the search warrant and continued investigation, the clothing believed to be worn by the shooter and a 9mm handgun were recovered as evidence. Also, as a result (sic) of this search warrant, David L. Johnson, 45-year-old male, was charged with Hindering Apprehension, a crime of the third degree, and released on a summons pending Court proceedings."

Police identified the suspect as William Hoyle, and a widespread manhunt commenced.

On Thursday afternoon, Hoyle surrendered to Camden Police, where Wildwood police picked him up.

Police say the victim is in the US on a student visa, and was an innocent bystander.  At this time, she remains on life support.

Authorities say Hoyle is charged with,

  • Attempted Murder, a crime of the first degree
  • Aggravated Assault, a crime of the second degree
  • Certain Persons not to Possess a Weapon, a crime of the second degree
  • Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, a crime of the second degree
  • Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes, a crime of the second degree
  • Possession of an Untraceable Firearm, a crime of the third degree
  • Possession of a High-Capacity Magazine, a crime of the fourth degree.
The police say their investigation is ongoing, and they ask if anyone has information about this case, they call Cape May County Crime Stoppers at 609-889-3597.
Suspects charged are considered innocent until they are found guilty in a court of law.
