Wildwood Polar Bear Plunge Cancels In-Person Event
We were excited when it was announced earlier this month that Wildwood's polar bear plunge (usually taking place on New Year's Day) wasn't cancelled altogether, but postponed to a later date. Now, apparently there will be no in-person event at all.
We shared the news in early January that the annual Polar Bear Plunge hosted on behalf of the Special Olympics of New Jersey was still to happen this year. They announced the first week of January that the in-person plunge would be held in March of this year, but the option to participate virtually was still available for those who would rather go down that route.
Now, it's been announced that the in-person event initially postponed until March will not be taking place at all now. According to NJ.com, both the Seaside Heights AND Wildwood plunges will not be hosting a live in-person event. Now, those who wishing to participate must do so virtually. Of course, this is to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The news is a bummer, for sure, especially when you consider how many people value and cherish this tradition each and every year. Now, it just won't be the same. It would have been one thing to participate virtually on New Year's Day, but now, the fun and thrilling aspect of starting off the new year with a freezing cold dip just isn't there.
