Wildwood Crest Mayor Injured in Ironman Race
They call Wildwood Crest Mayor Don Cabrera, " The Iron Mayor", for his fondness for participating in Ironman events.
Cabrera traveled to Wilmington, North Carolina to compete in the 2024 Ironman 70.3 North Carolina on Saturday.
The race, which attracted over 2,600 participants, featured a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run.
Mayor Cabrera completed the swim portion of the event before hitting a pothole during the bike ride, falling and breaking his shoulder, his humorous bone, and two bones in his right pelvis, according to the Cape May County Herald.
Don Cabrera is an Ironman Enthusiast
This wasn't Don Cabrera's first bike crash in an Ironman event, according to the June DelMo Newsletter, which noted that "he just crashed his bike and finished a 70.3" event in Maryland earlier this year.
The mayor also competed this year in a grueling-sounding Ironman race in Lake Placid that included a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run (marathon length). The mayor wrote on Facebook that it took him 14 hours to complete the race.
Cabrera started a local race in Wildwood Crest called the 'Crest Best Run Fest' and competes each August in the 'Tri The Wildwoods' Triathalon.
