Vineland Police Chief Charged With Assault, Suspended
NJ.com is reporting that Vineland City Councilman Paul F. Spinelli says that Casiano attended a retirement party Saturday night at a Vineland restaurant and that's apparently where the the assault took place.
Still, he doesn't know any of the details about it.
There was a retirement party Saturday for outgoing Vineland Fire Chief Luigi Tramontana, Jr, and the police chief was in attendance. The event was held at Merighi's Savoy Inn at 4940 Landis Ave in Vineland.
Councilman Spinelli says he also attended the party but he didn't see anything out of the ordinary happen that night.
"While I was at the event there was nothing going on. I went home and heard about it the next day", Spinelli told NJ.com.
The Cumberland Co Prosecutor's Office is Investigating
According to Councilman Spinelli, the Cumberland County Prosecutor's office is handling the investigation into the police chief.
Under NJ guidelines for internal affairs investigations, the county prosecutor's office is responsible anytime a municipal police chief is facing charges.
On Sunday, Vineland Police Chief Pedron Casiano was charged with a single count of simple assault, according to online municipal court records.
The charge is related to the incident on Saturday night.
NJ.com says Spinelli confirms that Casiano has been suspended because of the incident.
The County Prosecutor Jennifer Wenbb-McRae said she had no comment on Monday.
Casiano became Vineland's Police Chief in 2021 after having been the deputy chief for two years.
