The planned rebuilding of a part of the Ventnor Boardwalk is set to begin on or about Sunday, November 2nd, according to a Facebook post from Ventnor Police.

The project, which was announced this summer, will close a half-mile section of the Boardwalk from Surrey Avenue to Cambridge Avenue until about May 16th.

The Ventnor Fishing Pier on Cambridge Avenue will still be open during the Boardwalk construction.

Rebuilding Work on Part of Ventnor Boardwalk

Ventnor Police say there will be no access to the 8-block span of the Boardwalk during this work, as the existing boardwalk poles, in the ground since 1964, are being replaced.

Temporary fencing will be put up to close off the work area.

Police say the extent of the footprint of this job will be even larger.

Additionally, construction equipment will need to be staged on the beach block of Suffolk Avenue. Due to this construction equipment, there may be parking restrictions on the beach block are Suffolk Avenue and additional street ends where actual construction is taking place.

Other Aspects of Ventnor's Boardwalk Rebuilding Project

This is the first stage of a project that will eventually replace the entire 1.7 miles of the Ventnor Boardwalk.

The city secured a grant from the state of New Jersey for this work. Additional funding will be needed for the remaining work.

The Ventnor Boardwalk's distinctive herringbone decking pattern will be eliminated because of the additional cost. The new Boardwalk will have straight planking.

Ipe wood will be used in the Boardwalk rebuild. Environmentalists are opposed to the use of ipe wood, which they say leads to the deforestation of the South American rainforests where it originates.

Ipe is still a popular choice by New Jersey towns with boardwalks because of its durability and strength.
