According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue that is causing the problems is something called a steering gearbox worm wheel.

The NHTSA states the gearbox is faulty, and causes excessive internal friction in the automobiles.

That causes a sticky feeling when turning the steering wheel.

To date, it is believed the problem has been responsible for at least 13 crashes.
