Is It Time to Tone Down the Rhetoric in NJ?
It finally happened. I was out this weekend, and while in a local store, I overheard a conversation, between two men. They were probably in their 30s, or maybe 40s, and they were discussing a topic that I have strong opinions about.
I couldn't help myself. After listening to these guys go on and on, it was clear to me they didn't know what they were talking about. At 60 years old, I've seen a lot in my life. There are things the younger generations just don't understand.
I decided to speak my mind. What happened next, changed my opinion. No, it did.
It went down Saturday night at a pizza place in Absecon. I go there often. People are friendly and the food is good.
I've ordered all different types of pizza from this place. The wife enjoys the pepperoni and I like the mushroom.
Sometimes I'll get a pizza with anchovies and half plain.
My wife hates anchovies and derides me for my taste in toppings. She doesn't have to eat it, and the anchovies don't even touch her slices, but she doesn't want to hear it.
I share this because I learned a lesson about people's right to choose.
The men I referred to, were in the pizza place discussing what toppings to get when one of the men said he wanted to try the pineapple topping.

I couldn't help but inject my opinion that no one should ever be allowed to put pineapple on pizza. Why would you do such a thing to a perfectly good slice of pizza? I asked.
They pointed out that the sweetness of the pineapple enhances and compliments the zestiness of the sauce on pizza.
The guys said it goes great with bacon on pizza, and one of the guys told me his girlfriend- now wife, ordered pineapple on her pizza on their first date.
Then I thought about the abuse I took for ordering anchovies. I think I get it.
From this day forward, I pledge to be less judgmental about pizza toppings. Eat and let eat is my new mantra moving forward.
I doubt I'll ever order pineapple on pizza, But from here on in, I'll stick to my anchovies and keep my thoughts to myself.
