I'm going to be honest, I didn't realize the history of the Italian hot dog.  It's the hot dog equivalent of the pork roll egg and cheese sandwich.

I was surprised to find how few restaurants and hot dog stands offer Italian hot dogs.

They aren't easy to find, and most hot dog locations don not offer them.

The origin of the Italian hot dog is a place called Jimmy Buff's (see below).  The Italian hot dog was the brainchild of James "Bluff" Racioppi who created this delicacy in 1932.

Over the years, the Italian hot dog has evolved and is now available in many different versions.

The original Italian hot dog that Racioppi invented was made with a fried hot dog that was placed in an Italian roll or pizza bread.

It was then topped with fried bell peppers, potatoes, and onions.

Get this, Buff, as his friends called him, created these hot dogs as a treat for his friends who would come over and play cards.

They loved them, and the rest, as they say, is history.
