March 4th, 2005 was a very sad day in the history of the Atlantic City Police Department. That date marks the day an officer on the force was killed in the line of duty.

Thomas McMeekin, a 28-year-old Atlantic City native, was struck by a charter bus on March 3rd, 2005, as he directed traffic at an accident scene near the intersection of Atlantic and Chelsea Avenues and died the next day.

McMeekin's family has a long tradition of service to the city, according to the Associated Press.

"McMeekin comes from a family of police officers and firefighters. His father is retired from the Atlantic City Fire Department and he has a brother who is a firefighter, as well as at least six relatives on the Atlantic City police force."

The 5-year veteran of the Police department left behind a wife and a young daughter who is now 18-years old.
