Second Generation Owner of Fischer’s Shoes Passes Away
Norman Fischer, the owner of Fischer's Shoes in Linwood and previously in Margate, died on Friday, Dec 13 at age 90.
Fischer's Has Been Fitting Children's Shoes for 78 Years
Norman Fischer fit multiple generations of South Jersey family's feet during his 78 years working in the family business. In 1946, Norman's parents opened Irv Fischer's Shoes on Maryland Avenue in Atlantic City.
Norman, started working in the store at age 11 when it was in Atlantic City and called Irv Fischer Shoes.
Norman and his brother Martin opened a second Fischer's Shoes store in Margate in 1957 and closed the Atlantic City store two years later.
Norman and his wife Aubrey ran the store as a mom-and-pop shop, with the help of their son Alan, who started working in the store when he was 13.
Alan Fischer opened the Linwood store in Central Square in 1996, dedicated exclusively to children's shoes. He closed the Margate location a year later.
According to his obituary, Norman continued to work in the store, carefully fitting children's feet, until last summer.
His family remembers Norman as a walking encyclopedia about all things Atlantic City.
Norman & Audrey Fischer's Love Story
This part of Norman's obituary is especially sweet.
Norman met the love of his life, Audrey, at the age of 14. They spent almost 70 years building an incredible life together that was centered around their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
An important part of Norman's life was giving back to his community. He was in the Naval Reserves, a member of Avoda, a Free Mason, and an active member of Congregation Beth Israel.
In his downtime, he enjoyed reading, fishing, and puzzles and he was an incredibly talented photographer, painter, and pianist.
Norman Fischer's Extended Family
Norman Fischer is survived by his six children; Shelly, Brian, Debra, Bill, Alan, and Susan, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
His synagogue services were held on Sunday, December 15th.
