The law, known as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, was supported by lawmakers from both parties.

The law targets TikTok because it is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company.

There are concerns that the app collects personal data without users’ knowledge and that Chinese laws might force ByteDance to share that data with the Chinese government.

Critics fear the government could use this information for spying, cyberattacks, or to spread misinformation to influence American opinions.

Some argue that other social media platforms have similar risks, but TikTok is seen as a bigger threat because it’s controlled by a foreign country, especially one seen as an adversary.

While many once thought a ban was unlikely, experts have warned the issue is serious.

In May, ByteDance filed a lawsuit, claiming the law was unconstitutional, but a group of judges rejected this claim.

They ruled that ByteDance must sell TikTok by January 19, 2025, or face a ban.

Recently, a federal court upheld this decision, bringing the ban closer to reality.

President-elect Trump asked the Supreme Court to delay the ban, so his team could negotiate a solution.

If the ban is enforced, TikTok would be removed from app stores like Apple and Google.

It’s already banned on government devices, and internet providers could block access to the app.

Now, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the law is constitutional, making it more likely TikTok will be banned.

However, President Biden has said he doesn’t plan to enforce the law and will instead punt the issue to the incoming administration.

The future of TikTok in the U.S. is uncertain, and this story is far from over.
