Robbers Used Facebook in Mays Landing Car Sale Scam
Police in Hamilton Township have arrested five suspects and are looking for a sixth they say were part of a scam that used Facebook Marketplace to pretend to be selling cars as an enticement to draw victims to meetings where they could rob them.
The suspects lured victims to various locations in Mays Landing to purchase vehicles with cash, then robbed them at gunpoint, police say.
Following up on reports of these robberies, police tracked down two of the suspects after a foot chase on Monday, June 5.
Hamid Webb, 21, of Mays Landing, and a 17-year-old juvenile from Egg Harbor Township were carrying loaded handguns with high-capacity magazines when police arrested them.
Four others -- Develin Grant, 18, and Stephen Powell,18, of Mays Landing and two other teens have also been charged.
Hamid Webb was charged with robbery, weapons charges, aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, resisting arrest, and possession of a defaced firearm. He is being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
