Pregnant Mom Saves Her 3-Year-Old From Millville House Fire
A 6-month pregnant Millville mother did everything she needed to do to save her 3-year-old son and herself from a raging, early morning house fire over the weekend.
Katelyn Hatfield's father, Newell Branin Jr., described her story in a Facebook post.

Katelyn Hatfield “woke to a loud noise” around 4 am and checked the camera in her son Jack’s room, according to Branin.
She checked on Jack's camera, and everything seemed ok. But something told her to investigate. She opened her bedroom door and was met with a wall of thick black smoke and extreme heat. She shut the door and called 9-1-1, then made her way to Jack's bedroom.
Katelyn took her son, Jack, from his bed, opened the window, and put him outside on the home's side roof. Because of her pregnancy, she wasn't able to get out the window herself.
Katelyn stayed on the phone with the 911 operator and told Millville fire and rescue personnel where they were located in the home.
Millville EMS EMT's were the first on the scene. They told Jack to walk to the edge of the roof; he sat down and scooted to the edge, then he jumped to the arms of the EMT.
Firefighters Help Pregnant Mom From Burning Home
Shortly after, Millville firefighters arrived on the scene and put a ladder up to the side roof.
Two firefighters helped Katie through the open window and then helped her down the ladder to safety. Another firefighter put a hose in the window and knocked back the flames in the house.
Katie and Jack were moved to the waiting ambulance, evaluated, and transported to the hospital.
Thank God for Katelyn's training and experience. She knew exactly what to do, what to say and did not panic. I have no doubt that her actions saved Jack, the baby and herself.
Millville Fire Department was quickly able to bring the fire under control once the house was evacuated. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Newell Branin Jr. ended his Facebook post about the fire with a reminder to keep your bedroom door closed at night.
