The Walmart fulfillment center in Logan Township, Gloucester County is a major employer.

The center currently employs 113 people who depend on their jobs to survive.

Last week, those employees got the kind of news you hate.

This is especially true as the holidays approach.

Walmart announced that it would move its operations from the Logan facility to other facilities in its network.

The notice of their intentions was filed with the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development.

The company said it intends to offer pay to those impacted while they begin their job search.

Affected employees who are eligible will continue to be paid through March 7, and they will also receive severance pay.

Walmart released a statement in which it said,

Over time, as our fulfillment network has grown and we have launched new buildings, we’ve been able to serve customers and members with better reliability and speed by shifting volume to these other facilities.  The timing of the decision was driven by our lease commitments.

The company is offering employees the opportunity to transfer to another fulfillment center in Greencastle, Pennsylvania.

However, with Greencastle being 180 miles away from Logan, it's not likely this is a practical option for most of those affected by the layoffs.

Walmart has created what they call, Next Generation facilities.

The improved technology of the facilities is said to cut the distribution process by more than 50%.

Last year, Walmart closed another South Jersey location when they shuttered the Pedricktown facility.

That move led to the layoffs of over 200 people.
