New Technology May Eliminate Frustration for NJ Walmart Customers
🔴 Walmart Has Face Huge Losses Due to Shrinkage
🔴 The Company Has Placed Many Popular Items Behind Locked Displays
🔴 New Technology Will Allow Some Customers to Open Displays With Digital Key
If you've been to Walmart recently, you've probably felt the same frustration as me.
A trip to Walmart for some shaving cream requires the help of an employee to open the display and hand you the can.
You have to look for an employee and then hope they understand what it is you're asking for.
God forbid you're not sure which item you want.
The employee has to open the display and retrieve each item for me to look at and decide which I want.
Sometimes I require the employee to open several of the displays before deciding which item I want.
Then I feel guilty if I don't follow through and buy the item.
It's a frustration that has driven me away from Walmart for things I know are locked up.
Walmart, like many retailers has been hit with massive losses due to shrinkage.
Shrinkage is another term for shoplifting.
I don't understand how this became such a big problem, but it is.
It seems to have exploded after the pandemic.
It may not seem like stealing a can of shaving cream is a big deal, but it all adds up.
According to reports, shrinkage costs retailers billions of dollars in losses.

The problem is exasperated by laws that aren't enforced, or offer nothing to deter people from stealing.
Walmart has tried to cut its losses by putting more merchandise behind locked displays.
The problem with this approach is that it makes for a complicated shopping experience for people who don't steal.
Walmart said they are now testing digital locks on their displays that can be opened by using an app on your phone.
Currently, employees are testing this approach in several markets, but if it works, they may roll it out across the country.
The idea seems to be to make those electronic keys available to members of their Walmart Plus Club members.
