Wild South Jersey Tow Truck Carjacking Leaves Three Injured
A South Jersey man has been charged with first-degree carjacking, driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, and related offenses after commandeering a tow truck and crashing it into several vehicles.
Three people suffered injuries during the incident.
David Davis, 27, of Mantua, was arrested on Monday by the Washington Township, Gloucester County, Police.
Drunk Man Carjacks Tow Truck
The police say that at about 1:49 pm on Monday, a tow truck operator for Riehl’s Towing stopped along Delsea Drive in Washington Township near the Dollar General to secure a vehicle on his flatbed.
While the tow truck driver was working in the back, a man later identified as Davis entered the tow truck and drove off, causing the victim to fall from the vehicle and sustain injuries.
Davis allegedly drove the tow truck erratically and struck two vehicles head-on in the area of Delsea Drive and Salina Road, police said. The drivers of the two other vehicles were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
After the crash, Davis attempted to run away, but was caught and taken into custody by police.
Two Vehicles Were Heavily Damaged
Police posted photos that show an HVAC van with significant damage from the crash with the tow truck, which still has an SUV partially dangling off the back of the flatbed.
Davis was suspected of driving under the influence, and police obtained a search warrant for a blood test, which was administered at Cooper University Hospital.
Washington Township Police are still investigating the case.
