Warning Issued to NJ Turnpike E-ZPass Users

By now, most of us have an NJ E-ZPass account.

It's virtually impossible to use the Garden State Parkway or New Jersey Turnpike without an E-ZPass. At the very least, it's easier to use, than to dig through the car looking for enough change to pay all the tolls.

While using E-ZPass makes traveling on New Jersey toll roads easier, if you've ever had a problem with it, you know how expensive it can get, and how difficult it is to fix.

When you get a message from E-ZPass, you want to deal with it immediately so you don't get hit with extra fees.

There's a scam that has been targeting users in other states but has now begun to appear in New Jersey.

Here's how it works:

Unsuspecting victims receive a text from "NJ Turnpike toll services."

The message directs users to click on a link to pay an outstanding toll balance and avoid a late fee.

When you click the link, you're asked to enter your payment information, including your bank account number or credit card information.

Never Click Unsolicited Links

Authorities warn that this is a bogus text.  They warn users against clicking the link.

They say that for those who have already responded to the text, you should contact your bank and credit card companies immediately.

This scam has already been reported in other states, but New Jersey authorities have only recently been receiving calls from residents in New Jersey about these texts.

It should be noted that the scammers aren't necessarily targeting specific E-ZPass users, they target telephone numbers with New Jersey area codes, phishing for those with E-ZPass accounts.

Anyone who receives a bogus text is asked to report it to ReportFraudFTC.gov.
