Millville’s Mike Trout Nominated For Off the Field Award

Millville native Mike Trout has already racked up three Major League Baseball trophies for being the American League's Most Valuable Player. Now, the Los Angeles Angels outfielder is being recognized for some great things he's been doing off the field.

Trout is the Angel's nominee for baseball's prestigious Roberto Clemente Award. According to MLB.com, It's given each year to a player who "best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field."

Trout and his wife, Jessica have taken up the mantle of suicide awareness and mental health as causes they're supporting. It was just a couple years ago that Jess's brother, Aaron Cox, committed suicide. Cox, also from Millville, and had played minor league ball in the Angels organization.

The Trouts have partnered with the apparel company Tiny Turnip to create an initiative for suicide prevention and awareness called "Your Game Isn't Over Yet."

Jess wrote the following in a "Tiny Turnip" blog:

As you may or may not know, I lost my brother in 2018 to suicide. Over the past few years since that tragic day, I’ve learned that struggles with mental health are far too common. In the United States, almost half of adults will experience a mental health illness during their lifetime. Yet the stigmas attached to them cause many of these people to suffer in silence, which can be debilitating and even deadly. This is why Mike & I continue to partner with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and help raise awareness for the many Americans who may feel alone in their struggles. You are NEVER alone.
