The Middle Township elementary school teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student and having his baby was released from jail Tuesday until her trial.

The Press of Atlantic City reports the judge did so because she has no criminal record and only as long as she has no contact with the victim or the Middle Twp School District.

She must also comply with the NJ. Division of Child Protection and Permanency regarding contact with her daughter.

Caron was a 5th-grade teacher at Middle Township Elementary School #2 for 11 years.

The victim would have been 13 years old when their daughter was born in 2019.

Lauren Caron Is Facing Serious Charges

Laura Caron, 34, of Cape May Court House, is facing charges of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The prosecutor says Caron taught the victim and his brother in the 5th grade.

Caron became friendly with the children's parents and their two boys and a sister began sleeping over at her house occasionally.

The sleepovers began one to two nights a week, but the children stayed with Caron permanently from 2016 to 2020, according to court documents.

During her first appearance hearing last week, the judge identified Caron as a "resource family parent" for the children.

What The Victim's Family Have Said

The victim's sister allegedly told police she thought her brother was about 11 years old when he started sleeping with his teacher in the same bed.

Caron was 28 years old at the time.

The sister reportedly told officers that the three children would sleep together in a shared spare bedroom.

But she began to notice her brother would be in Caron's bed the next morning. She also reportedly told police that Caron would enter the bathroom when her brother would shower and lock the door.

The victim's brother reportedly told police he once witnessed Caron sexually violating his brother.

According to investigators, the victim’s father took to Facebook in December to say he thought that his son and Caron’s 5-year-old child looked like one another.

Caron and the victim were reportedly still in contact until his father began to question the relationship.

During an interview with the boy, police say the victim confirmed he had a sexual relationship with his teacher and that he was the father of her child.

The Defense Argument

Caron's attorney, John Tumelty, claims the state arrested her before DNA testing was complete, and that there's no real evidence that proves Caron's 5-year-old daughter is related to the victim.

"And only after the arrest, they get search warrants for her DNA. They got the victim's DNA, voluntarily from him, and they have a search warrant for my client's five-year-old daughter for her DNA. And that will take months for that evidence, that biological evidence, to be obtained, sent to the lab, and processed."

According to 6ABC, Tumelty said Caron lives at the home with her mother and that she was there the entire time the children were at the house.

My mother says she knew nothing about the alleged abuse.

Laura Caron was a college basketball star for Cabrini University while in college. Her major was elementary education.

Caron's next court appearance is Feb 25.
