Man Charged in Dennis Twp Theft, Shooting Leading to Manhunt
New Jersey State Police say one of two suspects in the attempted robbery of a dirt bike early Tuesday in Dennis Township was arrested Wednesday morning.
The men are believed to have fired shots at the bike's owner when he chased them, prompting police to close Dennis Township schools for the day.
One Suspect in Armed Robbery, Shotting Arrested, One Still at Large
Jamar Antoine Lovett, 28, was arrested at a home in the Tamerlane Campground in Cape May Court House after fleeing into the woods Wednesday morning.
Lovett has been charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, armed robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, and other related charges, according to NBC 10.
The second suspect remains at large, New Jersey State Police said. He hasn't been identified.
Tuesday's Shooting Caused Schools to Close
In a case that shook up residents, Dennis Township schools were ordered closed for the day, and one classroom was held in lockdown after police were called to a residence on Kings Highway in Dennis Township for a shooting around 5:28 am Wednesday.
The homeowner witnessed two men stealing his dirt bike and confronted them as they took off into the woods on foot.
The victim, Jesse Gery, shared surveillance video of two suspects wheeling his dirt bike out of his driveway and away from his home.
Gery said they took the dirt bike out of a trailer that they broke into inside his garage. They also stole his gun and his wallet.
Police Believe Thieves Were Using a U-Haul Trailer
A State Police chopper was seen hovering over a U-Haul truck and trailer that was parked a short distance up the road from Gery's house.
The victim's son told NBC 10 that dirt bike thieves have been known to use U-Hauls in their thefts.
