Why Your Job Might Be Affecting Your Well-being
We spend a significant amount of our lives at work. When we add up all of the hours we work per week, the average person spends about a third of their lives working. That is more time than most of us spend with our families. Our workplace environments are a huge part of our lives and can make a big impact on our health. Whether you’re working at home or at an office, prioritizing your wellness is incredibly important. Workplace wellness isn't just about physical fitness. It's about incorporating healthy routines that promote productivity and stop burnout.
Workplace stress and overworking are often signs that your work environment does not prioritize employee wellness. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, poor mental health can affect job performance, productivity, engagement. Blurring of work-life boundaries, stressing about job security, hostile work environments, and being a full-time working parent are just a few of the major stressors that affect workplace wellness every day.
While some workplaces are changing their approach to their employees wellness, there's a lot we can do to create our own healthy work environment. So how can we adjust our daily routines to prioritize health and wellness while we work a 9-to-5? There isn’t a concrete answer, but here are four techniques to make our jobs a better place to work.
More Health Tips
- 1
Emphasize the importance of mindfulness, mental well-being, and self-care
Many companies have completed or begun processes to incorporate mental health awareness into their policies. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a mental break to rest and rejuvenate your mind and body.
- 2
Try desk exercises and stretches
Sitting at a desk all day can have negative effects on heart health, metabolism, and muscle health. Taking short walking breaks, using the stairs, stretching at your desk, and even standing during phone calls are great ways to keep your activity up.
- 3
Prep your meals for the week
Refrain from eating quick vending machine or fast-food meals during lunch and prep healthy foods ahead of time. Food is fuel for our minds and bodies, so choose what you consume wisely.
- 4
Prioritize social connections
Organizing team-building activities and employee events helps significantly with social connection. Even knocking on your office neighbor’s door for a quick talk can boost morale.
