Sharon Urban from Cape May is a Cape May-Lewes Ferry success story.

Sharon started working at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry as a summer job back in the early 1990's in the food service department. She became intrigued by the Delaware Bay and the ferry boat business and in 1997 she joined the Ferry's Marine department as an Ordinary Seaman.

With additional certifications and accrued sea time, she rose through the ranks, serving as an Able-bodied Seaman, Mate, and Pilot.

Last Sunday, Sharon was promoted to the rank of Captain in the Marine Department, Captain Urban, the first permanent female Captain in the history of the ferry service.

“I’m honored to be selected to serve as a Captain aboard the Cape May – Lewes Ferry,” Urban said. “I'm grateful for all the training, advice, and support that I have received from my family and colleagues, past and present, over the years. I love being on the water and I take pride in providing the best possible service for our customers and leading by example. I’ve been in training for this position for 29 years, and it’s a tremendous opportunity. I couldn’t ask for a better career!”

“Sharon is a well-respect marine professional,” said Derek Robinson, Port Captain at the Cape May – Lewes Ferry. “Our Captains are more than vessel operators. They set the tone of the operation, mentor crew members, and are responsible for providing our customers a quality experience every day. Sharon was selected because she can meet the challenge.”

“We’re fortunate to have her as part of our team,” Robinson added.

As the manager and leader of a marine operations crew, the Captain has full responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel and the safety of passengers and crew. She is also responsible for compliance with all regulations applicable to the interstate marine transportation of vehicles and passengers.

Captain Urban possesses a United States Coast Guard Inland Masters License of unlimited tonnage and her USCG First Class Pilot upon the Delaware Bay. In addition to her USCG licenses, Captain Urban is also certified in CPR/First Aid, advanced marine firefighting and marine radio and radar operations obtained certification in ARPA, and medical care provider.

Sharon has come a long way from serving concession food on the ferry dock as a summer job. Congratulations to her!
