The partner of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office K-9, Bloodhound Memphis, wrote an emotional post on Facebook about the passing of his K-9 partner.

K-9 Lieutenant Darrell Myers posted on Friday to say that his partner, K-9 Memphis, had died of cancer after being diagnosed earlier this year.

It is with great sorrow that I must announce the passing of my K9 partner, Bloodhound Memphis.
K9 Memphis was diagnosed with lymphatic sarcoma early this year and was expected to live only a short while after that diagnosis was made. I never told her that, so she went right on living her fullest right up until the end.

K-9 Partners Graduated From Bloodhound Academy

Lt. Meyers and Memphis were part of the 2017 graduating class of the Cape May County Sheriff's Bloodhound Academy Class #3.

The 12-week Bloodhound Academy was conducted by the Cape May County Sheriff's Office in cooperation with the National Police Bloodhound Association and the Cape May County Police Academy.

The curriculum included basic man trailing, scent articles, trail work, report writing, criminal laws, first aid for K-9s, mental illness awareness, critical incident stress management, SWAT / tactical training, and trailing, and K-9 deployment.

A Bloodhound's Tracking Skill

Lt Meyers remembers that he and Memphis began to deploy immediately after graduation to requests for their help from police agencies around South Jersey and New Jersey.

K-9 Memphis worked for years helping to find lost and missing persons.

According to The Spruce Pets, no animal is better at tracking a scent than a bloodhound.

With the strongest sense of smell in the canine world, bloodhounds are exceptionally skilled trackers, especially when looking for people.

Their scenting abilities are so accurate that these dogs are used as police trackers, and their findings are even admissible in a court of law.

A Sad Goodbye

Lt. Meyers remembered Memphis and said that although her passing was expected, that didn't make the hurt of it happening any less painful.

He also thanked the Sheriff's Office for allowing him to work with such a loyal partner.
