A sergeant with the Hammonton Police Department has been indicted on charges in connection with the alleged theft of narcotics from the department's evidence room.

On Wednesday, 47-year-old Robert Zbikowski of Hammonton was indicted on charges of second-degree official misconduct, second-degree pattern of official misconduct, third-degree theft, fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence, and fourth-degree obstruction.

How the Investigation Began

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office says that in February 2024, they were notified by members of the Hammonton Police Department that Zbikowski had failed a routine drug screen.

According to authorities, an investigation began, and it was discovered that from October 2023 through his suspension in February 2024,

Sgt. Zbikowski was believed to have tampered with numerous bags of suspected narcotics in the evidence room. During an evidence room audit, multiple bags of suspected methamphetamine and oxycodone were found to have been tampered with or were missing entirely.

Second-degree crimes carry up to a decade in state prison.
