The Atlantic County, New Jersey Sheriff (Joe O'Donoghue) is accusing his opponent (Sean Riggin) of lying regarding his willingness to debate. This report will contain no editorial content whatsoever -- just the words of both candidates that will speak for themselves.

"Let's Set The Record Straight Again."

The statement being circulated by my opponent that I will not debate him is simply not consistent with the record, PURPOSELY DCEPTIVE and he 100% knows it, said O'Donoghue.

I have already participated in multiple public debates, union debates and candidate forums with my opponent, including an event TODAY at Oakcrest High School..Ask him how that went for him.

Here are a few debate/forums recently, (according to O'Donoghue):

  • The Atlantic City NAACP
  • The Venice Park Civic Association
  • The Atlantic City PBA
  • The Ventnor City PBA
  • Sheriff's Office PBA
  • Oakcrest High School Student Assembly.

With Under a month to go until Election Day, voters are making final decisions about who they believe should lead the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office and fill other elected positions in our area. I'm disappointed that Sheriff O'Donoghue has declined the invitation to participate in a live debate, and that Chairman Purdy has indicated that none of the Atlantic County Republican Candidates will be debating their opponents in any format this year.To be fair, Joe has participated in a few cursory candidate forums over the past few weeks, but a debate would give voters something different: an opportunity to hear us engage with one another and question/defend the claims that have been made so far during this election cycle.

I also can't help but note the contrast between this year and Joe's intense criticism of opponents in the past elections who declined to debate, wrote Riggin.

Invitation

Should both candidates agree, I will provide the forum for a debate in the interest of the public on the "Hurley in the Morning" program, on WPG Talk Radio 95.5 FM.

The rules would be simple. I will not pose any questions to the candidates. The candidates would each have opening and closing statements. The candidates will pose questions to each other. 2 minute answers and each candidate gets a 1 minute rebuttal.

I am offering a 1 hour or 2 hour debate. 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., or, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
