It’s About Time! AC Gets Its First LGBTQ+ Bar in 20 Years
The announcement that a new LGBTQ+ owed and operated restaurant and bar is opening in Atlantic City has to be a source of joy and pride for people who live in one of the most gay-friendly places in the nation.
The ByrdCage will be the first gay club in Atlantic City since Studio Six closed in 2004.
The ByrdCage is Coming to Atlantic City
The ByrdCage, located at 3426 Atlantic Ave. (formerly the swingers club Role Play Lounge and most recently Good Dog Bar), will be a restaurant and bar and much more, says owner Jason Tell, an award-winning caterer and party planner recognized as Philadelphia Magazine’s “Best Party Planner.”
Jason has over three decades of experience in the food and beverage industry, having worked in or owning restaurants in Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and Cape May County.
His concept for the ByrdCage aims to offer a unique and inclusive space for everyone -gay and straight alike-to enjoy.
“We are so excited to bring the ByrdCage to life,” says Tell. “This is not just a restaurant or a bar—this is a space where the entire community can come together, celebrate, and be themselves. We’re proud to be the first full-time LGBTQ+ venue in Atlantic City in nearly two decades, and we can’t wait to welcome guests to a place where they feel at home and safe.”
What is Planned At the ByrdCage
The press release for the ByrdCage promises a lively brunch menu, happy hour specials, and nightly dining.
The first floor will host a piano bar where patrons can enjoy great food and music in a relaxed atmosphere. The second floor will be home to entertainment with drag shows, theme nights, and plenty of fun and inclusive nightlife experiences.
Tell says he’s ready to breathe new life into the spot that was once a former swingers club: “The sex swings may be gone, but I’m ready to bring back a little kink…or at least “kinky boots” to the location!”
The ByrdCage is looking at opening in early January.
The Facebook page for The ByrdCage puts out this challenge.
"Atlantic City, get ready to embrace a new kind of space where Love wins, Everyone's Welcome, and the Good Times Never Stop?
From fabulous food and drinks to unforgettable vibes, we're crafting a place for you"
A Return to Fulltime LGBTQ+ Friendly Entertainment in AC
Atlantic City had a thriving gay nightlife with many gay bars and clubs through the years, including the 1920s pioneer, The Entertainers Club, considered to be the first gay club on the East Coast.
There were many others, including The Saratoga Club, The Chez, The Rendezvous, Pukalani, The Front Porch , Studio Six and the Brass Rail.
In 2011, Resorts opened Prohibition, the first permanent gay nightclub in a casino.
Atlantic City also has a gay beach, a gay neighborhood and hosts an annual gay beauty contest, The Miss'd America Pageant.
Atlantic City can certainly handle a fulltime gay establishment in 2025.
